The Art of Natural Dyes – Guide

The Courtyard of Natural Dyes – House of Swadeshi

The Art of Natural Dyes: A Guide to Colour Rooted in the Earth

There is something quietly radical about choosing colour that comes from the earth. No synthetics, no chemicals — just roots, bark, flowers, and time. At House of Swadeshi, our natural dye kit is an invitation to slow down and reconnect with one of India's oldest textile traditions.

Whether you are dyeing your first scarf or returning to a practice your grandmother knew well, this guide will walk you through everything you need to get started.

What's Inside the Natural Dye Kit

Our kit contains everything you need to begin your natural dyeing journey at home:

  • Carefully sourced natural dye extracts — plant-based, non-toxic
  • A mordant to help the colour bond with fabric
  • Step-by-step instruction guide (downloadable PDF below)

Each ingredient has been chosen with intention — ethically sourced, kind to skin, and gentle on the environment.

Before You Begin

Natural dyeing works best on natural fibres — cotton, silk, wool, linen, and khadi respond beautifully. Synthetic fabrics will not absorb the dye well.

A few things to keep handy:

  • A stainless steel or enamel pot (dedicated to dyeing — not cooking)
  • Rubber gloves
  • Warm water
  • A wooden stirring spoon

A Note on Natural Colour

Natural dyes are alive in a way synthetic dyes are not. Expect slight variations in shade — this is not a flaw, it is the fingerprint of a handmade process. Two pieces dyed in the same batch may differ subtly. We consider this a mark of authenticity.

Everything You've Wondered About Natural Dyes

Are natural dyes safe for children and sensitive skin?

Yes. Our dyes are plant-based and free from synthetic chemicals, making them safe for most skin types. We still recommend wearing gloves during the dyeing process to avoid temporary staining of hands.

Will the colour fade quickly?

Natural dyes do fade over time — especially with frequent washing — but this can be significantly reduced by using a mordant (included in your kit) and washing in cold water with a mild, pH-neutral soap. Many natural dye enthusiasts consider the gentle fading a beautiful ageing process.

Can I dye already-coloured fabric?

It depends. Light-coloured or undyed natural fabrics work best. Darker or previously dyed fabrics may give unpredictable results, but experimenting is part of the joy.

What fabrics work best with natural dyes?

Khadi, cotton, silk, wool, and linen absorb natural dyes most readily. The more natural the fibre, the richer and more lasting the colour.

How do I fix the colour after dyeing?

This is called "setting" the dye. A common method is a vinegar rinse for silk and wool, or salt water for cotton. Your instruction PDF (below) covers this in detail for each dye included in the kit.

Is natural dyeing environmentally friendly?

Far more so than synthetic dyeing. Natural dyes are biodegradable and derived from renewable plant sources. The dyeing process uses water, but avoids the toxic discharge associated with industrial chemical dyes.

Can I mix dyes to create new colours?

Yes, and this is where it gets truly creative. Overlaying dyes — dyeing in sequence — opens up a world of earthy, complex tones that no synthetic dye can quite replicate.

How long does the dyeing process take?

Most natural dye processes take between 1 to 3 hours from start to finish, including mordanting time. Some deeper shades benefit from an overnight soak. The PDF guide gives specific timings for each dye.
